Diversity and Cultural Competence for Community and Social Services

In communities across Canada, you find people of different ages, genders, ethnicities, abilities, socioeconomic circumstances, and sexual orientations. Without a clear understanding of diversity, you and your organization may fail to reach people who need and/or would benefit from the services you and your agency provide. In addition, those you are serving may not experience their needs as being fully met. When you and your organization are sensitive to what each person has to offer—staff or person served—and the impact of culture and diversity on working together, you will be better able to make a difference helping people to achieve their goals. After taking this course, you will have a better understanding of diversity in its various forms. This course explains what constitutes culturally competent practice, beginning with the influence your culture and diversity has on your practice. You will also gain the knowledge needed to identify the cultural groups in your service community and how their culture may influence how they experience your service. Through interactive exercises and vignettes you will be able to apply this information to real-life situations. This course is appropriate for anyone who has contact with clients in community and social services, including direct service staff, receptionists, and program managers.
