Effective Intervention in the Aftermath of a Suicide

Losing someone to suicide can result in grief reactions that are immeasurably complex, intense, and sometimes traumatic. Postvention offers unique support and intervention to the survivors of suicide loss. Unfortunately, clinicians often receive little to no training in how to best support those exposed to suicide.

In this course, you will learn the ways suicide loss differs from other types of loss. You will learn effective ways to communicate about suicide and avoid messaging that is incompatible with suicide prevention. Lastly, you will receive an overview of approaches you can use to support survivors of suicide loss.

The goal of this course is to provide addictions, behavioral health counseling, case management/care management, marriage and family therapy, nursing, psychology, and social work professionals and physicians in health and human services settings with skills for effectively intervening in the aftermath of a suicide.

Note: This course focuses on general approaches you can use at the community level in the aftermath of a suicide and for working directly with suicide loss survivors. It does not cover the complex emotional, ethical, legal, and other considerations that pertain to the clinician as a suicide loss survivor.
