The Role of Wellness in Recovery

Behavioral health conditions are among the most common health disorders in the United States, affecting nearly 50% of adults at some point during their lifetime (Mental Health America, 2015). In addition to the difficulties presented by mental health and/or substance use disorders, individuals with behavioral health conditions often face other health challenges that impact their wellness. More evidence has accumulated showing that a person’s physical and emotional wellness are linked. To effectively improve the well-being of individuals diagnosed with behavioral health conditions, it is essential that we consider and address all aspects of wellness. Effective behavioral healthcare cannot be provided in a vacuum that ignores the other dimensions of the person’s well-being. In this course, we will describe the various dimensions that collectively contribute to a person’s wellness. We will discuss how tools that promote wellness can have a positive impact not only on the person’s emotional functioning, but on specific health outcomes and overall longevity. Specific wellness programs and strategies will also be described so that you can incorporate these tools as you support others or embark on your own wellness journey.
