About the Alabama Department of Mental Health

The Alabama Department of Mental Health is the state agency responsible for serving Alabama citizens with mental illnesses, intellectual disabilities, and/or substance use disorders. The department was formally established by ACT 881 in 1965. Annually, ADMH serves Alabamians through a broad network of state mental illness facilities and community-based services. Community-based services include those provided by mental health centers, 310 boards, group homes and substance abuse providers.
