AAC Strategies for Patients with ALS

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is nearly universally beneficial for those diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as they experience a decline in speech function across the early, middle, and late stages of the disease. AAC for people with ALS supplements the use of natural speech until the person is no longer able to speak or demonstrate adequate intelligibility; at this point, AAC can replace natural speech as the primary communication mode. In this course, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) will learn low- to high-tech AAC options that are an appropriate part of a comprehensive communication plan as the disease progresses.
