Activities for Preschoolers: Language Development
One significant factor in caring for young children is an understanding of the child’s capacity to communicate. Through gestures, eye contact, crying, or other means, babies communicate long before they speak. Early language acquisition is instinctive and tends to happen quite naturally. (Cortese, 2020). Caregivers play an important role in providing experiences that promote a child’s language development. This course will examine the progression of oral language from birth through age five, delineating milestones you will recognize as the child develops. It will provide strategies that encourage the child toward those milestones. While children develop differently, this course will outline behaviors that may indicate a language delay.

Cheryl Smith Turner is the principal consultant and founder of REACH Teaching Learning Solutions (TLS), an educational consulting firm, with offices in Atlanta, Georgia. She provides educators with the insight and training for improved instructional strategies that contribute to a positive climate for learning, Cheryl obtained her Specialist in Education Degree from Georgia State University and her Master of Education Degree from Emory University. Cheryl is a nationally certified trainer for classroom management strategies and a state-approved trainer for the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL), a state approved trainer for Strengthening Families Georgia and is a featured presenter and keynote speaker for a variety of national staff development organizations, universities and agencies. Cheryl’s professional development content includes various topics related to social-emotional learning, child guidance, language and literacy, life skills and executive function, play-based learning and support of high needs learners. Cheryl belongs to several national and regional professional organizations and volunteers her service to numerous charitable and community-based child advocacy groups.
