Assessing Nutrition Status of the Critically Ill Patient

Accurately determining the energy needs of critically ill patients helps prevent underfeeding or overfeeding, leading to improved outcomes. Predicting energy needs in this patient population can be difficult due to the metabolic changes throughout the acute and recovery phases. As the use of indirect calorimetry to assess nutritional needs becomes more common in critical care, this course will explore the roles of the interprofessional team in optimizing metabolic testing. It will also examine how data from this testing informs treatment recommendations through scenario-based learning with a critically ill patient.
