Patients with ALS: Therapeutic Considerations

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive motor neuron disease. It involves degeneration in the upper and lower motor neurons that control voluntary movement, causing muscle atrophy over time. There is no cure, and most patients diagnosed with ALS have an average life expectancy of less than 5 years. Health professionals must know how to recognize ALS and support patients with this condition.
