Tobacco Use: Treatment

 Tobacco accounts for nearly half a million deaths yearly, and is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the U.S. The estimated total economic cost of smoking in the U.S is more than $600 billion yearly with over $240 billion spent on healthcare-associated costs. Although tobacco poses significant risks, healthcare providers have historically done a poor job of identifying patients at risk and providing effective interventions. Data reveals only 4 out of 9 people who smoke had their healthcare provider counsel them on cessation tips during a healthcare visit. This course will review the effects of tobacco on the body and will provide information on appropriate tobacco cessation treatments. It will use review questions and reflective thinking to promote active learning.
